Of the many varieties of Lycium, Lycium Eleagnus Barbarum has earned the respect of the great Physicians of Tibet for many centuries. The Tibetan variety of Lycium called Goji is considered to be the Mother of all Lyciums! It grows in very remote unpolluted hills and valleys of Tibet and Mongolia, and in the fertile valleys of Ningxia, China in soil so rich in nutrients that the berries are exploding with this special nurturing vitality. Scientists have found that Lycium Eleagnus Barbarum may be the richest source yet found of polysaccharides which is necessary for proper immune function and biochemical defense systems, including one that stimulates the pituitary gland to produce hgh human growth hormone. The Goji Berry, otherwise known as Lycium Eleagnus Barbarum is indigenous to Asia. It is a deep-red, dried fruit about the same size as a raisin. The Goji berry tastes to some extent like a cross between a cherry and a raisin. Goji berries are perhaps the most nutritionally-rich fruit on the planet. Goji berries contain 19 kinds of amino acids (six times higher than bee pollen) and contain all 8 essential amino acids (such as isoleucine and tryptophan). The Goji berry contains up to 21 trace minerals (the main ones being zinc, iron, copper, calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorus). There are an estimated 42 varities of goji berry. Some sellers are promoting goji berries that are actually of the Wolfberry variety (see here for a comparison of the lycium species), which have a slightly bitter taste. Lycium Eleagnus Barbarum from Ningxia China are sweeter and contain higher levels of nutrients and glyconutrients regardless of the growing climate. Goji berries or Tibetan Goji berries are technically known as Lycium Barabarum (Latin). They belong to the family of Solanaceae (flowering plants) which also have members like potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco. It is quite surprising to know that over eighty varieties of Lycium berry are found in nature. One of the most famous include the Chinese Wolfberry which is considered by Chinese healers as the best cure for male sexual dysfunction. But to be on a more technical ground, Chinese Wolfberry is just a genetic cousin of Lycium Barbarum and is not exactly a true Goji berry. Goji berries are perhaps one of the richest sources of vitamins and other nutrients. It has been clinically proven that they contain over 18 different amino acids and vitamins like B1, B2, B6, C and E. It is surprising but a truth that this fruit contains more Beta carotene than carrots and is perhaps the best source of vitamin C around. Only Australian billygoat plum and South American camu camu are richer than Goji berries where vitamin C is concerned.
