Shasta Black

Shasta Black is a striking dark fig with a story rooted in the history of Shasta County. This seedling was discovered growing near the old Pacific Railroad, along a historic route that has carried travelers through the region for generations.

The tree is not an easy one to reach. It grows up on the bank across from a swampy drainage ditch, making access difficult and helping this unusual fig remain somewhat hidden from view. Yet when the fruit begins to ripen, the figs become so intensely black on the tree that they practically announce themselves against the foliage. They are remarkably dark and impossible to overlook once you know where to look.

Inside, Shasta Black reveals a beautiful amber-golden interior with a rich, juicy texture. The flavor starts with a touch of bright citric tang, followed by an intense wave of deep, syrupy sweetness. That balance gives the fig both complexity and tremendous eating quality—the citrus keeps the sweetness from becoming flat, while the concentrated syrupy finish leaves a lingering richness.

A rare discovery from a historic corner of Shasta County, Shasta Black remains difficult to access and will stay rare until more trees become established and distributed. A fig with a distinctive appearance, a memorable flavor, and a little piece of local history behind it.

The picture with multiple figs contains ( left to right ) Shasta Cherry, Shasta Black and Petunia.
