Mango Jelly Roll is a striking green fig that earns its name the moment you taste it. The tree loads itself with large, beautifully formed fruits that hang confidently on the branches, often dehydrating right on the tree without collapsing or spoiling. Even under extreme conditions—standing in swamp water thick with cattails and grass from irrigation runoff—this fig refused to split, a testament to its resilience and excellent skin integrity.
Despite heavy overwatering, the fruit stayed pristine: no mold, no insect damage, and a consistently tight eye. These traits, along with its ability to hold fruit cleanly, strongly suggest Mango Jelly Roll will excel in humid climates where many figs struggle.
The flavor is where this fig truly shines. Juicy and rich, it opens with a gentle tang reminiscent of guava, followed by lush mango notes that roll together into a complex, tropical sweetness. The profile is layered, vibrant, and unmistakably unique—both refreshing and deeply satisfying.
Mango Jelly Roll was found growing next to Cherry Jelly Roll, not planted, as both are wild seedlings that emerged naturally in the same area. This makes their contrast all the more fascinating—Cherry Jelly Roll in deep purple, Mango Jelly Roll glowing green—alongside the nearby Raspberry Jelly roll, Lemonade, Pink Lemonade and Raspberry Lemonade, another wild seedling with green skin and a red interior. Mahasattva a pretty capri fig is also in this same grove.
Notably, Mango Jelly Roll has successfully held fruit in Tennessee without the fig wasp, with further confirmation anticipated from additional growers. Still, we cannot claim common till more reports come in. Large, juicy, resilient, and memorable, this fig feels poised to become a standout selection for collectors and growers in challenging, humid environments.
